It does exist. If you declare bankruptcy, it costs you $199 , and they are effectively wiped out. Obviously you have not done that. So they know that you are being honest when you tell them you can not pay any more. But you have to pay them cash and you have to pay them fast…. if they offer you a settlement. You need to know, before you call, how much cash you can get them by Friday. Then call and bargain..
Hi Dave,
You’re obviously going to have to double up on that minimum payment. That’s how they keep you a slave to the debt virtually forever. Keep paying the minimum and you’re looking at about 15 years to pay that $11,000 off.
I don’t know your situation but you could move into shared rental accommodations to cut down on your monthly expenses and/or you could get a part-time job to help pay the bill off faster.
Lastly, contact a credit counsellor, they may be willing to take on your debt at a negotiated rate or repayment.
Suck it up, get a second job, and start snowballing on your debt. Try Dave Ramsey’s book. Whether or not you choose to use his methods are up to you, but at least you’d have a pretty good idea of what you have to do to get out of debt.
Unless you start making more than the minimum payment you will be paying off this debt literally forever.
If it is a large amount and the min. payment is eating up most of your earnings you can call the Credit Card Co. and tell them that you need help or else you are faced to declare Bankruptcy… usually when you mention the word “possible bankruptcy” they become very willing to help. Ask them to immediately lower the APR to Zero and freeze the account until you have it paid off. Then your min. payments will actually make a dent into the amount owed and although this will get into your credit record… it is better than filing for bankruptcy, wiping the whole debt out, and then not having any credit for 5 to 7 years.
